Running final tests on a VUX-1UAV scanner mounted to a mid-size UAV and things are looking good, finally closing in on those tricky downtown scans where ground access is a nightmare.
Just wondering if anyone else has leaned on this kind of setup to patch together full city models. Did your workflow hold up once you hit the processing stage?
 
Great job on getting that setup just right. I've also used a VUX-1UAV rig for dense urban scans, and I found the workflow held up well, provided the GNSS/IMU calibration was on point. That multi-return data really comes in handy in those tricky areas. What software are you using for post-processing?

That's the heart of the matter right there. The GNSS/IMU calibration is where the rubber meets the road for these projects. I'm running the raw data through RiPROCESS for the initial trajectory processing and cleanup. How are you finding its filtering tools for urban noise?

RiPROCESS does a wonderful job if you make sure you set the thresholds right. I follow up with Terrasolid just to clean up anything it missed.
 
Using Terrasolid for the final classification and cleanup after RiPROCESS is a powerful combo. A good reminder that a single software solution rarely handles everything perfectly.
 
Yeah, used a VUX-1UAV on a similar UAV for dense urban scans. The flight and data capture went smooth, but processing downtown took some touching up here and there especially with occlusions and tight corners...sigh
 
Hearing from another operator with the same hardware is valuable. This confirms the VUX-1UAV works well in urban environments but the main challenge is post-processing. We recently completed our own initial downtown scan from this summer and we faced the same issues with occlusions and tight corners. Have you found a specific filtering routine in your software that automatically classifies noise under deep building overhangs?
